John C. Caviston married Margaret Earles.1 John C. Caviston was born in 1839 at Ireland.3 He immigrated on 26 December 1849 to America. He left Ireland that day with his mother, a sister and other relatives. After six weeks on a sailing vessel, he arrived in New York and came at once to Penn Yan, where he resided the rest of his life.3 He died on 19 November 1921 at PennYan, New York.3 The following obituary was published on 21 November 1921:
John C. Caviston
Died, at his home in Penn Yan, Saturday, November 19, 1921, John C. Caviston, aged 82 years.
Mr. Caviston had been in poor health for six years, and for more than two years he was unable to leave home. The last few months of his life he was unable to help himself at all. During the entire period of his illness he was given the most loving and self-sacrificing care that a child could bestow on a parent, by the daughter who has always lived at home, Miss Ida B. Caviston.
Mr. Caviston was born in Ireland. On December 26th 1849, he left that country for America, coming over with his mother, a sister and other relatives. After six weeks on the sailing vessel, they arrived in New York and came at once to Penn Yan, where he had since resided.
His wife was Margaret Earles. She died twenty-five years ago. Eight children were born to them, six of whom are living: Mrs. John Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Patrick Culhane, Miss Ida B. Caviston and Wilford Caviston, of Penn Yan; John Caviston, of New York City and Bernard Caviston of Washington, D.C.. Two other daughters, Mrs. Thomas Carmody and Mrs. J. E. Creary, are dead. He was the last of the family.
In early life Mr. Caviston had to face the hardships and struggles that were common in those days. Young people had to work hard, and schools and churches were not as numerous as they are now. There was no Catholic church in Penn Yan when Mr. Caviston came here. A priest came here occasionally and celebrated mass in some of the homes of the parishioners. So Mr. Caviston was one of the oldest members of St. Michael's church.
For a great many years Mr. Caviston was engaged in business in Penn....3
His funeral was in November 1921 at in St. Michaels church, Penn Yan, New York.
