Tribute to Priest

To the Editor of The Post-Standard:
To the regret of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Father Vincent J. Kilpatrick gave his departing speech at each Mass Sunday before leaving for the Army.
I feel I am expressing the sentiments for the entire parish in the following poem I have written to Father Kilpatrick as a parting tribute.
An inspiration as we pray,
a "crutch" to lean on if we stray.

Unending patience when we sin,
Hopeful words without chagrin.

A friend to all, young or old,
Whether in or outside the fold.

A pal to the children, good friend to the young,
He's loved and respected by everyone.

Our source of comfort, in trouble and strife,
Brings a ray of light to the dark things in life

His quick Irish humor, and infectious smile,
Chases gloom and trouble away for awhile.

Our prayers will be with him though for or near,
(He's only "borrowed," you know, for a year).

'Till then we'll be happy knowing the he
Ministers God's great love to ones such as we.

- Thelma J. Applin.

Father Vincent preached at the Diocesan celebration. The following article appeared in the May 24, 2000 edition of the The Catholic Sun:

Jubilees and jokes
Priests celebrate anniversaries and imperfections during Mass at St. Margaret's
By Jennika Pierie
SUN editor
Mattydale - Filing into St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale on May 9, priests from around the diocese came together to celebrate a Mass in honor of those priests marking 25, 40, 50 and even 60 years in their vocation.
The solemn nature of the Mass, celebrated that day by Bishop James Moynihan, and celebrated countless other times by the priests present, soon dissolved into uproarious laughter as Father Vincent "Nails" Kilpatrick delivered his homily.
Father Kilpatrick began by asking all priests present to stand, "all those who still can," and applaud their appreciation for Bishop James Moynihan and Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Costello. "Some of the homilies they give would bring tears to a glass eye," Father Kilpatrick said.
He told those gathered of a common theme of vocations in many of Bishop Moynihan's homilies delivered during confirmations. "The Lord calls those who may not be first class, they may be undesirable. And that is why the class of 1950 is here today," Father Kilpatrick said. Himself a graduate of this class, Father Kilpatrick went on to describe each of the priests he graduated with, and "why they are undesirables."
"Two went bad and became monsignors," Father Kilpatrick joked.
Beginning with Msgr. Eugene Yennock, Father Kilpatrick said, "You look, at him and you say, 'There is a kind, gentle and compassionate priest.' But he's a biker." Father Kilpatrick said Msgr. Yennock could be found in his room with goggles and gloves saying "vroom, vroom."
Next, Father Kilpatrick spoke of Father John Mulranen. "Now, would I buy a used car from him?" he asked. "His great contribution to our class was that he flunked Hebrew in the seminary," Father Kilpatrick said. "But John was dedicated and he wanted his degree, so he took it again." Father Kilpatrick said the diocese interpreted this as a great penchant for languages, and assigned him to a Slovak parish where he couldn't speak a word of the language.
For Father Casmir Krzysiak, Father Kilpatrick said, "He is a mystery to us. We never saw him until the day he got to the Cathedral ... He went through so much suffering to become a priest, to do the work of God. He lived under communist rule, under Nazi rule." One of Father Krzysiak's claims to fame is that he shared a room with Pope John Paul II while in the seminary. "What I want to know is, how ... could there be 428 guys in that room?" Father Kilpatrick said.
"They used to have the right reverend, the very reverend, I will now talk about the barely Reverend Donovan." Father Kilpatrick joked that Msgr. William Donovan once received an award from the Vatican. "For the first time he was assigned to a parish more than 15 miles from his home."
Of Msgr. Shields Dwyer, who died in 1999, Father Kilpatrick said he was "always suffering," and remembered Father Charles Borgongnoni asking him to share food with him.
Father James Larkin, who died in 1988, was remembered as being called "Shirt." "He had one shirt that he wore all through his seminary years," Father Kilpatrick said.
Not even The Catholic SUN was spared from Father Kilpatrick's good-natured ribbing. He spoke of Andy Warhol's saying that everyone has 15 minutes of fame in their lives. "My fame lasted 1.5 seconds. The phone rang one day and a girl said 'Is this Father Kilpatrick?' She said, 'I'm writing a story about outstanding priests in the diocese,' and I said, 'Well, finally.' She said, 'What can you tell me about Msgr. Watley?"'
But Father Kilpatrick said there was one feature each of the priests shared, "They are all good priests."
Bishop Moynihan joined in the fun while thanking Father Kilpatrick in his closing remarks. "It's a wonderful reflection. We thank you for all those remarkable scripture quotes salt and peppered throughout," he laughed. "Thank you for helping us see ourselves in those eight men you describe."
Bishop Moynihan went on to speak of how the Holy Spirit spoke to Mary, announcing her role as mother to Jesus, and her reaction of "How can this be?"
"I'm wondering if there is a single priest among us who cannot describe his own priesthood within the framework of this dialogue between the angel and Mary," he said.
"With God, nothing is impossible, with God, all things are possible. Even to make of us, you might say, Christ-bearers, to make of us good priests," Bishop Moynihan said. "With all of our foibles, with all of our human imperfections, we are able to be "other Christ.'"11
.12 He died on 17 September 2008 at Van Duyn Home & Hospital, Syracuse, New York, at age 84.13 The following obituary was published on 20 September 2008, The Syracuse Post Standard at Syracuse, New York:
