When first married they lived in George's home at Waverly, Iowa. They moved to Greene , Iowa, in 1939, and to San Antonio, Texas in 1942. Their first four children died in infancy. An adopted son, Joseph James Anderson, and two daughters, Jane Anderson McAuliffe and Mary Anges Anderson Kutac survived to adulthood. After the death of her husband, Agnees worked as a law librarian at St. Mary's University School of Law and at the Bexar County Law Library, Wilford Hall hospital, Lackland Air Force Base. She died from cancer and is buried with her husband and four infant children at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Waverly, Iowa.

While his formal education ended in the seventh grade, he valued learing and it was his wish that each bequest be used for the education of his young relatives.

He returned to Winterset in the early 1950's, where he cared for his aunt, Virginia Monaghan, and her farm. After his retirement he lived in Winterset and enjoyed the companionship of his brothers and their families.

He was active in the Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge and various police organizations. At the time of his deaht in 1990, he ahd twenty-five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
