     Father Arthur J. McAndrews, RIP

We have just celebrated the Feast of the Resurrection. Father Arthur J. McAndrews went to his death firmly convinced and committed to his belief in eternal life and looking forward to the glory of Heaven. This is the faith he preached throughout his life...
We recall also that it was within the walls of this hallowed and aging St. Thomas Aquinas Church that all of our family members, including Father McAndrews, were baptized, made their First Holy Communion and were confirmed. It was here, too, through the years that many family members were married by Father and began their married lives strengthened by the grace of this sacrament. Here also the funeral Masses of our grandparents, parents, and other relatives were celebrated and their souls commended to the mercy of God. We recognize that all of the most important events in our lives revolve around our parish church. As a young man, Father McAndrews recognized and accepted an invitation from God to come and follow Him--to serve Him and His Church as a priest of God.
Father McAndrews' vocation was fostered and developed within his family. He often spoke of the great faith of his parents and how they were so faithful to Mass and devotions. He recalled the hard times they experienced, but their faith in God enabled them to persevere. He attended the local grade and high school and graduated as valedictorian of his class. After studying with the Christian Brothers at St. Thomas College he applied for admission to the Diocese to begin his seminary studies. Because of his scholastic record he was chosen to study at the Catholic University of America where in addition to his theological studies he also obtained a : Master's degree in sociology...
In considering Father McAndrews' life we are struck by the great spirit of dedication and his own reverence for the gift of the priesthood. In whatever parish he served, whether as assistant or pastor, he was the good shepherd. As I travel about the Diocese for one occasion or another, people often speak to me about Father McAndrews. Mostly they tell me about how kind he was and how caring he was to the sick and any family which was having trouble. They speak about his devotion at Mass and the wonderful sermons he gave. They say that he was a priestly priest.
If we study the Gospels, we see that the outstanding characteristic of the life of Christ was his role as the faithful servant of God. "I have come to do your will, O God." He told the apostles, "The Son of Man has come not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. " This must also be the primary role of every priest--to be the servant of God and of his people--with all that that concept entails. The gift of the priesthood is not given to him for himself but for the people. The role of servant is brought to mind each day as he says the words, "This is my Body which will be given up for you. " So in imitation of his master, the priest gives up himself each day more and more to expand his saving role on behalf of his people. This is his sacrifice which is united to that of Jesus. Each day is a renewal of his call which the priest affirms and a rededication to the emptying of himself so that Christ, his model, becomes more visible...
One of the greatest things that can be said about a priest is that he was happy in his vocation. This is one of the characteristics that I observed in the life of Father McAndrews. What we celebrate today in the life of Father McAndrews is the daily living of his vocation for sixty-five years in such an admirable fashion and to such a high degree. We are celebrating fidelity.
